Before looking at Team Culture Development it is critically important to understand the real financial cost to a business of people not working together as a reliable committed team and the cost associated with demotivated staff leaving.
McKinsey & Co in a September 2023 article identified staff grouped into six archetypes along the satisfaction spectrum. This showed that typically less than 50% of staff were reliable and committed.

Clearly the costs to a business associated with the Quitters, Disruptors and Mildly Engaged is difficult to quantify but is undoubtedly substantial.
With regards to the costs around staff leaving a business, The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development data states that 34-35% of UK employees change jobs/leave each year. Oxford Economics state that the real cost of a leaver to a business is equivalent to £30,614 (recruitment, onboarding, training, lost knowledge, inefficient working, errors etc)
So, a business employing 24 staff will have 8 leavers at £30,614 per leaver with a total real cost to the business of £244,912 each year.
Clearly this is an average across the UK for all business sectors, and some businesses will not be as markedly impacted but at even at 50% of this figure it is a huge annual cost for a business to absorb.
Gallup state that 42% of staff turnover (leavers) is preventable but often ignored.
Higher-engagement companies see 21% higher profitability and 31% lower staff turnover (Source RecruitRecruit Nov 2025)
It is therefore very clear that a business can avoid substantial financial costs as well has enhancing its operational outcomes by focusing on Team Culture Development.
Clearly a significant factor in any business achieving success is its people and how much they can be relied upon to be conscious, productive, reliable and self-managing. In short, the business is only as good as the people within it.
Therefore – What We All Know
- The success of any business is dependent on the people who work in it.
- How people perform in the business will dictate its success.
- Success is increased when people communicate effectively, feel motivated, secure and heard.
It is not ‘rocket science’ to achieve a cultural change which increases success and value – it merely needs focus. A strong positive Team Culture will benefit the Company and also the individuals who work in it.
Cultural Change Will…
- Encourage and support self-management
- Improve communication
- Improve staff retention and reduce absenteeism
